DESCRIPTION
The Prescott College Art Gallery at Sam Hill Warehouse announces the opening of the art exhibition, A PLACE CALLED HOME, featuring the collaborative sculptural works of Prescott based artists, Roger Asay and Rebecca Davis.
Asay and Davis have partnered since 1983 as collaborative artists creating sculptures and installations from natural materials. These minimalist works focus on the organic richness of the material itself. The exhibition is on view January 13 – February 10, with a Reception for the Artists on Friday, January 13, from 6–8 pm.
Asay and Davis joined forces as artists in 1983 to begin a series of installation sculptures under the broad title of "Wood and Stone, Substance and Spirit" that has lasted over 30 years. Though both artists had been enjoying individual success, the shift toward the creation of a unique body of collaborative installation works, created by paring down found natural material to its essence, proved very powerful.
This new body of work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Coconino Center for the Arts, University of Arizona Art Museum, the Scottsdale Art Museum, Tucson Museum of Art, the Roswell Art Museum, Tempe Art Center, Mesa Contemporary Arts and others. Group exhibitions include such venues as the Phoenix Art Museum, Austin Museum of Art, and SOFA NY and SOFA Chicago.
Their work is found in numerous private and public collections. The work of Asay and Davis carries a recognizably distinct character built from a long and rich relationship between the two artists and between the artists and the landscapes they explore.
The artists state, "In this exhibition, A PLACE CALLED HOME, we explore familiar materials that abound in the Prescott Basin. Because the land is so diverse in its offerings, we are able to bring together but a sampling of all that there is to be experienced in this amazing place that we have called home for so long. Each sculpture speaks for itself, but carries with it the joy we find in discovery and collaborative sharing. May these materials that we know so well strike a chord deep within all who call Prescott home."
Join us on Friday, January 27 at 7:00 pm for an artist talk with Roger Asay and Rebecca Davis in the gallery. All events are free and open to the public. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. For more information please contact 928-350-2341 or visit www.prescott.edu/gallery. This exhibit is made possible in part by funding from the Prescott Area Arts and Humanities Council and the City of Prescott.
