February 18 - "Verde Dirt" with Virginia Rood Pates
Chunks of feldspar and granite and flecks of manganese and copper break through the translucent porcelain glazes in the ceramics of Verde Valley Campus instructor Virginia Pates. Pates searches the Verde Valley region for dirt to create texture across her sparse, cylindrical forms; sieving and mixing the dirt with her clay in bands and seams, very much like the natural landscape.
Pates received an MFA from the University of Wales in the UK, and has taught ceramics in England, Mississippi and Arizona. She now resides in the artists’ community, former mining town and excellent dirt location of Jerome, Arizona.
